The name of this sophisticated Japanese tea translates to ‘jade dew’, describing the color of its infusion. Our gyokuro is grown in rich volcanic soil on the south eastern coast of Kyushu, an area known as a leader in organic farming practices. ‘Umami’ in taste and aroma, with a sweet rich finish, the leaves are very fine, needle-shaped and a brilliant dark green color due to being shade grown, which gives gyokuro a higher chlorophyll content than most teas.

Flavor:

Umami, seaweed, sweetly grassy and rich.

Tasting Notes:

Gyokuro, or "jade dew," is one of Japan's most exquisite green teas, treasured for its rare quality and refined taste. This loose leaf tea is shade-grown for several weeks before being harvested from the tea plant, a process that reduces sunlight exposure and enhances levels of both chlorophyll and L-theanine. As a result, the tea leaves produce a brew that’s smooth, sweet, and full-bodied with minimal bitterness or astringency.

Carefully steamed and processed soon after harvesting, our Gyokuro tea is produced in the fertile volcanic region of Kyushu. The final leaf is a deep emerald green with a needle-like shape, releasing a grassy, straw-like aroma when steeped. The flavor is rich in umami, with layered notes of seaweed, fresh greens, and a pleasant sweetness that lingers on the palate.

The brewing process is key to unlocking the elegance of Gyokuro. It’s best prepared with water at just 165°F to gently coax out the complex flavor. When brewed correctly, the resulting cup is silky and elegant, offering a delicious drinking experience that reflects the care in every step of its cultivation and preparation.

Unlike sencha and other Japanese green teas, Gyokuro’s flavor profile is more mellow and luxurious, thanks to its unique shading and steaming techniques. The tea’s taste, smell, and texture vary slightly depending on how each plant is cultivated, shaded, and processed, making each harvest a distinctive expression of Japanese tea craftsmanship.

From the moment the tea leaves are picked to the time they’re brewed in your cup, Gyokuro represents the harmony between nature and tradition. This exquisite japanese green tea is perfect for anyone seeking a smooth, elegant, and deeply satisfying cup.

Whether you enjoy it in quiet reflection or as part of a shared tea moment, each drink of Gyokuro connects you to the vibrant world of Japanese green teas. The plants that produce this exceptional tea thrive under the soft light of limited sun, and each steep reveals more of its rare, complex charm across multiple cups.

Organic Japanese Gyokuro

I have cancer, and have been reading furiously for good foods and teas to use. This tea was highly recommended as one of the best green tea for cancer. I make a cup of this every morning (1 heaping teaspoon and steep for 10 mins per my cancer book) before I eat about 2 hours later. I love it so much- very earthy unique flavor that I now crave, and I can't wait to get out bed to enjoy. It's true food as medicine.

My most favorite tea

I love Gyokuro and I have been ordering Tea Spot's for a few years now. While I haven't consumed a Gyokuro I have yet to enjoy, Tea Spot's is a nice step above others I have had. It just tastes a bit cleaner and smoother. I'm really not sure what it is about this tea that I love so much. I just know that I just get this immediate sense of calm and relaxation when from the first sip I take. Maybe I am just overtaken by the delicious flavor or maybe it truly has that much L-theanine. I honestly don't know. I just love the flavor and the experience of drinking it, and I am not one who typically cares about the latter. I highly recommend this tea to green tea lovers. Just note that this tea really is brewed best at lower temperatures and for shorter durations of time (I personally use simmering water and brew for just under 2 minutes).

Perfect

This tea has a smooth rich green flavor that I can’t compare with anything else. If you enjoy green teas that have depth and complexity this is a delight for the senses. I’ve only had it as a cold brew so far, I imagine made fresh and hot will also be outstanding. I bought a 1/4 lb knowing only the description, I was not disappointed.

Perfectly warm

This tea is amazing! We swerve your teas to our clients at our design studio and I felt like trying something different from the jasmine pearls I usually order and being cautious I ordered the small sample size packs…. I will be ordering the 1 lb bag tomorrow. I found the tea rich and warm in flavor , the perfect afternoon sipping tea
