Tasting Notes:

Lapsang Souchong tea leaves are withered over pine root fires then panfried, rolled, and oxidized. The leaves are finally placed in bamboo baskets and hung on wooden racks over smoking pinewood fires to dry and absorb the smoke. This results in a powerfully smoky aroma coupled with a smooth taste.

Legend has it that the process for this smoked black tea came about during tribal times when a village burned all their possessions and inadvertently smoked the tea. Another story states that during the Qing Dynasty, an army unit passing through a village occupied a tea factory filled with fresh leaf awaiting manufacture. When workers could get back into the factory, they realized that for their tea to arrive at market in time, it was too late to dry the leaves the usual way and open fires of pinewood were lit to hasten the drying. When the tea reached the market, the smoke flavor created a sensation and a new product was born.

Lapsang Souchong Is My Long-Time Favorite

Lapsang Souchong has been my go-to black tea for more than 60 years. I began drinking it while in college. Yes, I am older than dirt. Perhaps, the exotic, smokey character of my tea of choice is what keeps me mentally and physically active. Who knows? I would be the first to agree, however, that it is an acquired taste. I buy my supply in bulk by the pound. For the beginner, I strongly suggest first trying a sample size of only a few teaspoons. There is a chance you might not care for it at first taste, or never at all, but if you are curious give yourself the opportunity to become acquainted with a unique tea.

Not just for drinking

I'll admit, I'm not a fan of drinking this tea. The smell is full on campfire smoke, but the tea itself reminds me of something fishy. But, here's the secret. Use a pestle and mortar to grind the tea into powder and add it to your salt pot for a smokey salt at the table. Or add it to your pasta sauce, or tomato soup. Make a large vat of tea and use it for brining your Thanksgiving turkey. Rub it on steaks, pork, chicken when grilling on a gas grill.

This isn't so much a tea as it is a seasoning. And it's fantastic!

Tea for Scotch drinkers

As the title implies, this tea is not going to be for everyone. But, if you like scotch or mezcal, this tea is probably going to be right up your alley. It isn't just smoky; it's the smokiest. Has almost a beef jerky flavor to it.

TEA SPOT --spot on with customer service

When I call the TEA SPOT with an order or a question I am greeted promptly by a PERSON--not an artificial person--a real person who can deal with whatever I need, courteously, efficiently, intelligently and with good humor. I can buy elsewhere but personal customer service is, sadly, becoming a rare thing. Charge more $ if you must but don't mess with your customer service.

Smokey Delight

I was very hesitant to try this tea as it was the first Lapsang Souchong tea I've bought. It sat in my cabinet for a few weeks before I decided to give it a shot...it took me off guard. The smokiness is spicy and the blend creates a full bodied flavored. I'll be buying a bigger bag. If you like pumpkin spice and any spice teas I think you will like this. Great blend.
